The Life Aquatic: Enjoying The Peninsula’s waterways

POSTED BY John Ireland ON 18 Dec 2020

From the crests of the ocean waves to the stunning clear waters of Pittwater, the sea is one of the things which makes the Northern Beaches Peninsula such a sought after place to live.

The idyllic coastal area and the outdoor lifestyle are huge selling points for buyers looking for property in Avalon Beach and surrounding areas. The best part is you don’t have to own a super yacht or even a kayak to be able to enjoy our beautiful waterways.

The following are some clubs and organisations you can get involved with on and in the waters around Avalon, Clareville and Bilgola.

Avalon Sailing Club

Joining a club is a great way to become familiar with sailing as a complete newcomer to the sport. You don’t have to own a sailboat and it’s an excellent social opportunity for kids and adults alike.

Avalon Sailing Club is always looking for new members. Joining as a crew member is great fun for those wanting to get started with yachting in Avalon as a hobby. As a non-competitive club, the emphasis is on having a good time and making new friends.

Sunday is the busy day for this club. Yachts race in the afternoon with courses that vary in length and style. The club has a structured program for teaching children to sail and there’s also a learn-to-sail camp held in the school holidays.

You can join the club online or pop down on Sunday to have a look around and ask any questions.

Bei Loon Dragon Boat Club

If you’re looking for something a little different to sailing yachts, you can join the local dragon boat club, which is based down the road in Bayview.

Dragon boat racing is both an ancient tradition and a growing sport. It provides a fun opportunity to stay fit and make new friends.

The club trains several times a week on Pittwater and you’re welcome to turn up and try a few paddles before you join as a full member.

There are teams suitable for all ages from 18 and up to the over-60s and there’s also the “Pittwater Pinks” – a team made up solely of breast cancer survivors.

Avalon SUP

Enjoy being ‘on the water’ and master this fun and healthy activity at Avalon SUP, based at Clareville. SUP or Stand Up Paddleboarding is a sport that’s gaining popularity with all ages and is an ideal way to enjoy the tranquillity of the Northern Beaches while getting fit at the same time.

Get the hang of SUP-ing on still waters or in open surf. Some enthusiasts like to combine it with yoga for an extra challenge!

You can book group or individual lessons with Tony at Avalon SUP or join one of the daily paddle groups for a workout with a difference.

Pittwater Kayak Tours

Choose your own adventure and discover the waterways like you have never seen them before from Palm Beach.

Wake up early for a sunrise tour and see the picturesque views of Pittwater, Barrenjoey Head and Palm Beach as the day begins, or opt for a daytime tour combined with a bushwalk in Ku-Ring-Gai National Park.

Peninsula kayak tours can also be booked for birthday parties along with swimming and fun games on the beach.

Boat charter

The Reliance is out and about almost every weekend, hosting birthdays, anniversaries and corporate parties. This classic timber boat hosts up to 30 people and comes with its own skipper so you can relax and enjoy the good life.

You can also choose something more high end and charter a luxury yacht for the day. Taylor Made Yachts is a Palm Beach boat hire business with a fleet of stylish French yachts.

Getting a boat licence

Make the most of the Peninsula lifestyle and get your boat licence so you can be the skipper. To get a boat driving licence in NSW you’ll need to provide evidence that you have boating experience and pass a knowledge test.

Anyone from the age of 12 can hold a licence (albeit with some restrictions for the younger captains). Fees for a new licence start from $30 a year.

See you on the water!

I’m passionate about the conservation of our waterways but this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be able to enjoy them!
