Caring for the planet, it’s easy!
POSTED BY John Ireland ON 18 Dec 2020
Avalonites are known for being responsible and doing their part to care for our local area as well as the planet. If you haven’t adopted environmentally friendly practices at your place just yet, there is no better time to get started.
Here’s a look at a few ways to go green to help protect our beautiful suburb.
The 3 ‘R’s’ to Sustainability – Reduce, reuse, recycle
This popular catchphrase has been around since the beginning of the green movement, and it holds as true as ever.
Small, simple tweaks to your daily routine can have a big impact. For starters, keep a few reusable grocery bags in your car, purse, backpack or wherever is convenient for you in case you need to make a last-minute grocery run. This will go some way towards reducing the staggering 5 billion plastic bags which are used around the world every year.
When stowing leftovers, use reusable stainless steel or glass containers instead of plastic film or aluminium foil, and take a reusable water bottle instead of buying single use plastics bottle when you go out.
Finally, don’t forget to take that reusable coffee cup with you when you head to one of Avalon’s many cafes. Not only does this help the planet, you can often get a discount on your morning takeaway.
Composting basics – Compost your scraps
Composting has become a popular trend again in recent years, as it is a way to reduce unnecessary food waste, while naturally boosting your garden and plants.
Instead of tossing your plant-based scraps in the bin, use an area in your garden or a compost bin to mix them up with your soil and let the mixture decompose together for a few weeks. Stir everything up each time you add new scraps and you’ll always have a supply of rich soil, packed with nutrients and worms. There’s nothing quite like growing your own veggie garden.
Don’t have room for a compost? You can also donate your compost materials to the Avalon Community Garden.
Sustainable home renovations
If you are renovating your Avalon Beach home to be more environmentally friendly, plan to use sustainable materials like bamboo and recycled wood products. Look into upcycling and see where you can re-purpose materials and components without having to buy new.
For interior renovations, think about letting in natural light to reduce your reliance on electric lamps. Invest in insulation to regulate the temperature inside your home so you don’t need to use the air con as frequently.
Shop for environmentally friendly appliances
With today’s modern technology, home appliances are more energy-efficient than ever before. When shopping, look for the Energy Rating on your new washing machine, dishwasher or fridge. The more stars an appliance has, the more money you’ll save on your energy costs.
While we’re talking appliances, do you part for the planet by switching off that second fridge and hanging your clothes out to dry when you have the time.
Take a look at the cleaning products and other chemicals you use throughout your home. As you use these chemicals, the residue soaks into the ground or runs down the drain, potentially getting into our drinking and swimming water. In many cases, there is an alternative product that works just as well, but without the harmful components.
From the fridge to the pantry and the laundry cupboard, next time you’re doing the weekly shop, take a look at which products have a reduced environmental impact and make some more planet-friendly choices.
Every little bit counts! If you incorporate just one of the environmental tips listed here, you’re still making a great contribution to preserving our planet. Once you get started, you’ll likely find that you are excited to try even more environmentally friendly home ideas in the future.
