Initiatives making Avalon Beach and nearby communities a better place

POSTED BY John Ireland ON 18 Dec 2020

The Avalon community is driven by a core of environmentally and socially responsible residents.

Many of us chose to live in the area because of a desire to live a more conscious life. Swapping the hustle and bustle of the city for a beachside location, we seek a cleaner environment and a more harmonious existence. This is part of the reason why property in Avalon is so sought after.

Avalon residents are interested in making sustainable choices and being part of a strong community. The following initiatives reflect this and have ‘local’ at the heart of what they do.

Boomerang Bags

Reducing plastic use by refusing plastic bags when out shopping is an easy change for any individual to make.

If you’ve forgotten your reusable bags, there’s no need to resort to plastic – simply pick up a free Boomerang Bag from selected stores in Avalon.

Boomerang Bags are made by volunteers, using recycled materials. They offer a fun and free sustainable alternative to environmentally damaging plastic bags.

There are Boomerang Bag boxes at Beach Central, YouSave Chemist, Avalon Organics Fresh Fruit & Veg, Chambers Cellars and Avalon Village Meats. There are also boxes at Clareville shops and North Avalon shops.

Living Ocean

Living Ocean promotes the awareness of human impact on the ocean through research, education and creative activity in the community. The charity celebrates and honours the natural environment and lifestyle that the ocean can offer us.

Living Ocean’s whale research program builds on exploration that has been conducted off our coastline by experts over many years. Its Centre for Marine Studies enables students and others to become directly involved.

Through partnerships with individuals and organisations, Living Ocean conceives, creates and coordinates campaigns that educate all layers of the community. This includes their ‘No Plastic Please’ campaign, which is delivered in partnership with local schools, as well as film nights and lectures aimed at the wider community.

Additionally, Living Ocean raises funds for ocean-oriented conservation and protection groups such as Sea Shepherd.

Living Ocean was founded in 2010 in Whale Beach on the east coast of Australia by co founders Robbi & Carol Newman and Deon & Kim Hubner.

They are a growing community, connected by our love of the ocean and waterways that surround us.

One Eighty

Mental health challenges can cast a shadow on even the most idyllic of neighbourhoods. Inspired to move towards a future free from youth suicide, a group of young people in Avalon have set up their own charity called One Eighty.

The initiative was set up to help connect young people to existing mental health services. As well as running workshops on mindfulness and meditation, One Eighty campaigns to raise awareness of mental health issues and remind young people of the importance of asking for help.

The primary focus of this charity is preventing youth suicide but they also work to promote and support youth creativity and culture, encouraging community participation on the Northern Beaches.

Permaculture Northern Beaches

Permaculture Northern Beaches (PNB) is an active local group based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Permaculture is a design system that promotes sustainable human habitation. A major focus is the sustainable and harmonious use of resources for safe food production. This practice offers positive ways to create healthy environments by working with nature rather than against it.

At PNB, members can learn how to keep bees, pick up skills for composting and worm farming and discover natural alternatives to herbicides and pesticides. There is even a permaculture program for children.

Permaculture offers a positive way to create healthy environments for your family, friends and neighbours by working with nature rather than against it.

When you become a PNB member, you gain access to workshops and events and can tour other people’s gardens. You are encouraged to actively share, swap and sell seeds, produce, food and equipment.

Avalon Community Garden

Not all houses for sale in Avalon have a large garden, but this doesn’t have to be a negative. If you’re living in an apartment, or your own patch of garden is too small, check out the local community garden.

Created as a not-for-profit to encourage sustainable gardening techniques in the community, the garden is open to everyone from children to the elderly. Local residents are encouraged to join, to learn new skills, meet new people, stay active and share the organic fruit and vegetables that are grown in the garden.

New members are always welcome so if you ‘dig’ gardening, feel free to stop by.

Avalon – a great place to live

The number one goal of everyone in Avalon is to keep our local village a beautiful and natural land to live and raise a family. This community spirit not only makes Avalon a wonderful place to enjoy a balanced and healthy lifestyle, but it also is one of the reasons why our Northern beaches properties are some of the most sought after in the country.

Being a long term local, I am really excited to be a part of this growing awareness within our community, and humbled that so many of our local businesses have a focus on protecting our lands and supporting our community tribe.
