Why retirement living isn’t what it used to be
POSTED BY John Ireland ON 18 Dec 2020
Many Australians have the impression that retirement living means ending up in a block of dingy and cramped apartments. This holds them back from enjoying the freedom of downsizing.
However, this notion is no longer true. These days, retirement communities are more akin to resorts, providing a variety of social and lifestyle benefits.
Retirement living on the Northern Beaches
On The Peninsula, more than 16 percent of the population is aged 65 or older. More than 18 percent are between the ages of 50 and 64. That’s a lot of people at or near retirement age.
As health care continues to improve, people are living longer than ever before. This means more time to enjoy retirement!
On the Northern Beaches, retirement villages are taking notice of that fact that seniors are fit, healthy and looking to continue their busy lifestyles. Around here, seniors are more likely to be surfing than playing shuffleboard. They’re active as volunteers and they are highly involved in their grandchildren’s lives.
As a real estate agent, I’ve noticed the trend away from yawn-factory retirement villages. One local example, Avalon’s Pittwater Palms, embodies this by offering modern conveniences and a variety of activities for residents to enjoy. The complex is complete with a swimming pool, spa and gym, as well as a billiards room and an arts and crafts space. Residents also have access to a handy village bus for when they don’t want to bother with traffic and parking.
Modern retirement villages are designed for the not-so-retiring. They have a clear understanding of what the baby boomer generation is looking for after downsizing.
Spacious senior apartments
Today’s over-55 real estate in Sydney’s Northern Beaches offers more luxury than ever before. You’ll find generously sized apartments with roomy living areas and comfortable bedrooms. With so much space, retirees are able to have friends and family over to visit without having to worry about where everyone will fit.
Kitchens and bathrooms have received an update from the retirement communities of the past as well. Modern appliances make it easy to whip up something delicious (now you finally have time to cook!), and beautiful fixtures and fittings help retirees to love where they live.
Gone are the days of dark and boxy apartments. Modern retirement homes are designed to allow in as much natural light as possible. In fact, terms of design and layout, there is very little difference between a retirement apartment and a ‘regular’ apartment.
Busy social lives
Retirement villages in Avalon and surrounding suburbs are designed to be communities in themselves. Move into one of these residences and you’ll be amazed at just how quickly your social calendar will fill up. Between regular resident gatherings and events organised by the community, you’ll never find yourself wondering what to do.
A standout feature of modern retirement villages is the common area where residents can mingle or bring visiting friends and family. BBQ areas, clubhouses, pools, fitness centres and more are becoming more common. It’s like having a large property, without the responsibility of looking after it!
